George Saunders might be my new favorite author. I know you
may have heard that from a lot of people lately, but trust me, it’s for good
reason.
His settings tend to border on science fiction, but don’t
expect any aliens or ray guns in this book. If his point can be better made in
a universe that doesn’t quite match up with our own, then that is where the
story will be set.
His language is not flowery or elaborate. Instead, it’s
punchy, to the point, and often hilarious. In very few words he makes you
understand the personalities of his characters so well that even if you hate
them, you have to sympathize with them. Through a style entirely his own, Saunders explores the
awkward and uncomfortable aspects of human nature.
This is my favorite book so
far this year.
