Simon and Schuster's Brand New Genre: Pulp History

Priscilla Painton, a vp and editor-in-chief of S&S's Adult Publishing Group, explains this new project:

"Back in the 19th century, no self-respecting publisher would dare produce a work of history without lavishly illustrating it first. Now, Simon and Schuster is going back to the future" with this new series.

Each book "chronicles history's extraordinary but little-known feats of bravery, violence, and redemption. They each feature a gripping narrativek impeccable research and high quality color illustrations. Pulp History pulls together the best parts of comic books, popular nonfiction and graphic novels in an irresistible new format. These tales of derring-do are thrilling, beautiful and historically accurate.

These true stories are meant for lovers of history--the hidden kind left out of textbooks. Each book is written by a critically acclaimed author at the top of his game, and illustrated by one fo the premier graphic artists of our time."

The first two books of the series are being released this month:

In DEVIL DOG, the most decorated Marine in history fights for America across the globe—and returns home to set his country straight. Smedley Butler took a Chinese bullet to the chest at age eighteen, but that did not stop him from running down rebels in Nicaragua and Haiti, or from saving the lives of his men in France. But when he learned that America was trading the blood of Marines to make Wall Street fat cats even fatter, Butler went on a crusade. He threw the gangsters out of Philadelphia, faced down Herbert Hoover to help veterans, and blew the lid off a plot to overthrow FDR.

In SHADOW KNIGHTS, everyday men and women risk their lives on top-secret missions to sabotage Adolf Hitler’s Third Reich. Hell-bent on conquering Europe, Hitler had just set his sights on England when Winston Churchill reached into his bag of tricks and invented a secret spy network of ordinary citizens. These schoolteachers, housewives, prostitutes, and farmers abandoned their former lives, trained in covert black ops, and set Europe ablaze. Parachuting into Nazi territory under the cover of night, they destroyed factories, armed resistance networks, and turned Hitler’s juggernaut on its head.
