Pete Recommends...

Peter Hedges' upcoming novel tells the story of Tim & Kate Welch, a middle-class couple living among the elites in New York City's tony Brooklyn Heights neighborhood. Their lives of parenting, pre-school, and parks become dazzled when the eccentric, super-rich Anna Brody moves into the neighborhood and soon declares Tim & Kate her new best friends. The Welch's flirtation with upper-class mores makes for a pleasurable read, and watching the couple nearly destroy themselves in the process has several funny & tender moments. For instance, one soon won't forget the character Bea Myerly. Her one sentence declaration in chapter three says it all.

While reading about the comings & goings of those who stroll along Pineapple, Henry, and Montague streets is great fun (and I believe many readers will want to visit the neighborhood after finishing the novel), the real action picks up in the second half of the book. It's too good to give away, but I can honestly say 'The Heights' has one ofthe better endings I've read in quite some time.

I can't wait to read this book! Especially since the author lives in our neighborhood. Thanks for not giving away the ending. Maybe they'll make this a movie like they did "What's Eating Gilbert Grape" by the same author.
