Emily St. John Mandel's second novel, "The Singer's Gun" proves she is a writer to watch out for. Anton Waker wants out of the life of corruption he grew up with. Unfortunately, it isn't an easy thing to shake. Elena, a college drop-out in the US illegally, wants never to return to her isolated hometown again. These two form a love based on half-truths and outright lies told by Mandel with unflinching honesty. This is a novel of suspense, mystery, and of international intrigue. It's one of family loyalties, of the haunting price we pay when we want to go out on our own.
